The Peabody-River King State & Fish Wildlife Area abuts the Kaskaskia River along its northern boundary and encompasses approximately 2,000 acres of lakes, ponds, and native prairie, grassland, and wetland landscapes. The site was donated to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources by the Peabody Coal Company in 1994. In fact, the area's numerous lakes and ponds that exist today are the remnants of Peabody Coal Co.'s surface-mining operations that date back to the 1950's.
With more than 20 deep-water ponds and lakes, the site features plenty of fishing opportunities suited for all skill levels, including a designated youth fishing lake, Mink Lake, for children between the ages of 2-15. Visitors need not travel far for accommodations like dining and shopping; the site is located just outside the City of New Athens, IL.
